Prologue: In the beginning

Many believe that our earth was made in just one week, by God Himself. Truth is, God made the earth, and it was good. But it wasn’t in just one week. That was just one of many stories Gabriel, the archangel, enjoyed to tell the little hairless apes and one of them chose to write this story down and save it for thousands of years for other human beings to read and believe.
“God is almighty and what He says is good and true, and He can make one whole planet with everything in it in just one week.” That was what they were supposed to believe, and they did believe, thanks to Gabriel.
But still, the earth and everything in it wasn’t made in just one week, though to God and his children, the angels, it may have seemed like just a week. They had existed for much longer than we can ever imagine, and everybody knows how time flies when we enjoy something. It must have been like this for God and his angels, because it was good and they wondered what would become of every living thing on the planet.

One angel in particular. He was the youngest of them all and when he was wandering the earth with one of his brothers one day, they halted at a beach to look at the beautiful sunset. The younger one gawkily moved towards the water, fascinated by the beauty before him, as his older brother gently, but firmly, gripped his arm and made him stop. He pointed towards the ground, where a small creature struggled to reach the land.
“Don‘t step on that fish, Castiel,” the archangel said as he bent down a bit to be able to look his younger brother right into the eyes. “Big plans for that fish.”
Castiel, the younger angel with eyes as blue as the sea and the skies, watched the fish in awe as it was moving and glittering in the sunlight, even clumsier than him as it proceeded and moved towards a big future.

From this day on, whenever Castiel was allowed to, he enjoyed to watch his Father’s creations, walking the earth himself. Every time his brothers Gabriel and Michael accompanied him, and while they were watching the creatures, Gabriel told his little brother about anything wondrous he had observed while he was talking to the humans like their Father had told him to.
“They... take fruits from trees and bushes and put it in their mouths and bite on it. They call it ‘eat’. They also consume water. This they call ‘drink’. It is odd, considering the fact that they were living in the waters once, don‘t you think?”
Castiel nodded and laughed at the obvious irony, his older brother laughing with him.
“Brother Gabriel...” Castiel said in a lowered voice, as he was watching Michael’s behind as he was standing a few meters away from them, looking down at one of God’s creations with a serious expression in his face. “Do you think Lucifer will accompany us down here one day? I feel bad for not being able to share all these observations with him when they make me feel happy. If he would just look at them for a second-”
“Let‘s go,” Michael suddenly said, in an unnaturally loud voice, causing Castiel to freeze for a second. Then both he and Gabriel hurriedly got on their feet, following their brother back to heaven.

Lucifer, second oldest of them all, envied the hairless apes and most of all his impression that their Father seemed to love these humans more that he loved them. And so it was only natural that he wasn’t able to obey to his Father’s command to love them more than they loved God Himself. Before them, he had been God’s favorite and he became conceited and didn’t want his Father to love those creatures more than He had loved him once. Every now and then he and Michael had long arguments about this and every time Castiel would visit Gabriel to ask him more questions about every living thing on earth. Gabriel would answer any and every question Castiel had about them, but sometimes Castiel could see his shoulders jerk a little when Michael or Lucifer were raising their voices to shout at the other. Lucifer wanted his brother to understand, and Michael wanted the younger one to obey to their Father’s commands. But every time Lucifer would run off in rage and didn’t return for several days.
Only the other archangels knew that he was trying to show his Father that they had flaws and were nothing like them, and also that they disobeyed, if you just pushed them a little into the wrong direction.
While it may not have been in the form of a snake, Lucifer appeared before Eve and tempted her to eat from the forbidden fruit in God’s favorite garden.
But just like Lucifer’s interaction with the female was unknown by Castiel, he also didn’t know about Eve and Adam being banned from the garden, because the woman had disobeyed God’s order.

It was only years later that Castiel or any of the other angels were allowed to walk the earth again and he was surprised at how differently the humans lived now. The male and the female had reproduced and their two sons were already fully grown up and working hard to gain fruits and vegetables in a land that was so unlike God’s rich garden, in which everything was available without them having to work as hard as they were forced to do now.

“They disobeyed and were banned from God‘s precious place of peace,” Lucifer said as he suddenly appeared behind Castiel, a pleased look on his face.
“Didn‘t think Daddy‘s little favorites would be full of flaws, did you, little brother? But how could you? You have always been protected from anything evil, and so you don‘t even know about its existence.”
Lucifer was circling Castiel, waiting for a reaction.
“B-but... look at them... they all work together to be able to live. Like a family. Like us...”
“LIKE US? I tell you, brother, they are NOTHING like us. They are filthy hairless apes, we‘re superior to them. Have always been and will always be. Our Father just hasn‘t seen the flaw in his creation yet! Come with me, brother! Maybe we will be able to persuade him to destroy them and with them all the evil and everything will be like it was before!” Lucifer was talking in rage, his voice louder with every word he spoke and his formerly beautiful face was now a mere grimace formed by jealousy and hatred towards the humans.
Castiel wavered for a minute. If this was true, then maybe his brother was right. But never before had God made a mistake and Castiel himself saw how hard they all worked together and the adoration in the eyes of the two old humans.
“... No, brother,” Castiel finally said. “I trust our Father, and you should do the same. He‘s infallible and it is not on us to judge Him or His creations. I believe that He made them like this on purpose.”

Lucifer’s face fell in frustration, and once again he raised his voice.
“Fine. Watch them, and I promise you that I am right and you are wrong. They are evil. ”
And with that Lucifer was gone.
But Castiel stayed to watch them while he was thinking about what Lucifer had just said to him. What was that ‘evil’ he had been talking about? Was this just about disobeying? He had never seen an angel disobey, so he didn’t know what it was like, or why anyone would do that. And what would happen if they continued to disobey? Would this ‘evil’ spread among them? And would this also affect the angels?
So many questions filled Castiel’s head, but he wasn’t able to find an answer to even one of them, which was why he just continued to watch them silently, looking out for any sign that showed him that his brother was maybe right, but all he saw was love and hard work.
Until one day.

Every once in a while the two younger men brought sacrifices towards the Lord. One brought the meat of his youngest sheep, the other one brought fruits and vegetables from their fields. And always the first was looked upon by the Lord while the other brother wasn’t.
And that particular day, which was the last day that Castiel would watch the humans for a very long time. The man that had brought the fruits before God led his brother to a glade in the nearby forest, where he just turned around and beat his brother until his death.

Of course, Castiel couldn’t understand. It was sheer envy that had driven Cain half mad, until he couldn’t keep himself together any longer and killed his own brother Abel. Castiel understood that it was the longing to be loved that was the cause for all of this, but he could not understand how the man could kill another creature, let alone his own brother. It sent shivers down Castiel's spine as he looked at the deformed face of Abel and thought of what his own brother had told him about the ‘evil’ that was in them.
Was that it? It must be it. Castiel had never seen anything like this before, and he was sure that he never wanted to experience anything like this again.
But also... he couldn’t help but think of Lucifer because of something else than just his mere words. Lucifer also wanted to be loved. Was he just as desperate as Cain? And even though he despised those creatures so much, would he become just like them and even...?

Castiel didn’t want to continue the thought, too repulsive was this thought.
There might be love in those humans, but there was also - definitely - something else in them, something evil.

trocket on August 21st, 2011 12:36 am (UTC)
Okay :) It's mostly fine, just a couple things to tweak here and there but nothing major at all. Your write very well considering english isn't your first language! (better than some native speakers to be honest)
sarerusareru on August 21st, 2011 12:41 am (UTC)
